A. Bewaringsboerdery – Hartbeesfontein

A. Conservation agriculture – Hartbeesfontein

A visit to a farm in North West where the farmer decided about nine years ago to change from conventional to conservation agricultural practices. Since then, maize and sunflower are successfully produced under no-till and crop rotation, and earthworms are present in the soil again. The change in soil properties and effect on the farm business will be discussed.

B. Re-mining and rehabilitation – Stilfontein

The following sites in the Stilfontein-Klerksdorp area will be visited:

  1. Old gold tailings dams with erosion and spillage and rehabilitation of the steep slopes. The effect and advantage of rehabilitation will be demonstrated.

  2. Footprints of old gold tailings dams. Some of them rehabilitated and others still uncovered. The buffer capacity of dolomitic soils versus soil from quartzites will be explained and demonstrated.

  3. Re-mining of gold tailings dams. The hydraulic mining methods will be demonstrated and different anthropogenic profiles will be demonstrated.

  4. Freatic water levels on the tailings dams and seepage.

  5. Artificial wetlands associated with the mining of old gold tailings dams.

Erosion on steep goldmine tailings slope and the effect of vegetation
Dust pollution of uncovered gold tailings
Stofbesoedeling deur onbedekte goudslik

Acid mine drainage water from gold tailings
Suur mynwater vanaf goudslik

C. Visit to a farm in Viljoenskroon district: Precision farming in practise

A visit to a farm in Viljoenskroon district where precision farming is practised. From soil maps, depth of water table and yield maps the yield potential is calculated. Differentiated amounts of fertiliser are applied as well as differentiated application of fertiliser in accordance to the chemical grid maps. Farming practices, implements used, maize fields and a soil profile will be demonstrated.

D. Sosiale ekskursie

Totiushuismuseum
